Description

This object is a beautiful and unusual HII region located 11,000 light years away in the constellation of Sagitta. The progenitor star at the center, WR124, is a Wolf-Rayet star. These hot powerful stars generate extreme stellar winds and are responsible for some of the most beautiful nebulae in the sky, including the Crescent Nebula, the Bubble Nebula, the Gourd Nebula, and Thor's Helmet.

The nebula is also known as M1-67 and as Merrill's Star, after its discoverer Paul Merrill in 1938. It is about 2 arc-minutes in diameter, which corresponds to a diameter of 6 light years. Because of its small circular shape, this nebula is commonly incorrectly believed to be a planetary nebula.

I find the structure of this object to be fascinating. I don't recall seeing another DSO with these types of bright red irregularly-shaped blobs.
