Description

Messier 82 (also known as NGC3034, Cigar Galaxy) is the prototype nearby starburst galaxy about 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. The starburst galaxy is five times more luminous than the whole Milky Way and one hundred times more luminous than our galaxy's center. The starburst activity is thought to be triggered by interaction with neighboring galaxy M81.

SN 2014J, an apparent Type Ia supernova, was observed in the galaxy on 21 January 2014. [Source Wikipedia]. There are some suggestions that the SN began brightening around January 17th.

The image was captured with the Meade 12"LX200, using the Atik 383L+ mono at F7.16. Astronomik's 12nm Ha filter was used.

All subs were taken at 1x1 bin, -10C, and 10 minutes each.

Ha: 43 subs (7.17 hr) on Jan 25th and 26th.

Ha: 21 subs (3.50 hr) additional on Feb 4th and 8th.

Red: 6 subs (1.00 hr) on Feb 4th.

Green: 7 subs (1.17 hr) on Feb 4th and 8th.

Blue: 7 subs (1.17 hr) on Feb 8th.

Processing was done with PixInsight, following (for the most part) an abbreviated version of kayronjm's tutorial of Feb. 24th. Only Ha was used to develop the Luminance image. I hope to add color as weather permits

This was shot in virtually the same location as my previous NGC2403. And as expected, the NB filter does much better combatting light pollution. A close inspection of the background shows quite a bit of noise still. I hope to correct for that as I get more integration time.

North is up, and this is a very slight crop.

EDIT Jan. 27, 2014:

Added 19 more Ha exposures at 600s each to the luminance. While waiting for better skies to do some RGB, I chose an old (2006) color image done with my Canon 300D camera to add to the mix.

EDIT Feb.10, 2014:

Added 21 more Ha exposures at 600s each to the luminance. Collected approx. one hour each of R, G and B and blended these with all of Ha.
