Description

The Rosette Nebula is a large (130 lightyears diameter) HII region - 5,200 lightyears away from earth. In its core is the open cluster NGC 2244. The light from the young stars excites the atoms of the surrounding gas - which makes them emit light. The stars in NGC 2244 are born from the nebula itself when gravity pulls the gas to the inside.
