Thanks for a great 2012

2012 was the first full year of AstroBin's life, as the site was launched in November 2011. So let's wrap the year up. Almost 200,000 people visited the site, totaling almost 4 million page views!

That's way beyond my expectations, so it was a great year!

I would like to give a huge thanks to:

  • The 20+ people who have helped translate the site to 13 languages. We are all indebted to them. AstroBin contains around 10,000 words, so it was no picnic.
  • The dozens and dozens people who have helped by reporting bugs, and making requests. A lot of the best features of AstroBin have been suggestions coming from you users.
  • All those who have been active with AstroBin Questions, the Q&A website for astrophotography, who have helped create a small community there.
  • Carine Souplet of Astronomie Magazine, a French publication, and Luigi Fontana of Nuovo Orione, an Italian publication, for writing and publishing articles about AstroBin.
  • Every one who has blogged about AstroBin, or put a link on their website, or talked about AstroBin with their club members or other friends.
  • Every single one of you for doing a great job with not abusing the site. There hasn't been a single incident.

Thank you all and a happy and clear 2013!

Most popular makes on AstroBin

Written by on June 4, 2012 .

In the last week, you guys have done a fantastic job sorting out the mess out of the Gear database, and now it's cleaner than in my rosiest expectations!

The next step, on my side, will be to merge items that are really the same object, just spelled or named differently. Things like "TeleVue Powermate 2x" and "TeleVue 2x Powermate".

In the meantime, let me offer some interesting stats.

The most owned telescope or lens makes

  1. 528 owners: SkyWatcher
  2. 477 owners: Celestron
  3. 287 owners: Orion
  4. 255 owners: Canon
  5. 251 owners: Meade
  6. 150 owners: Takahashi
  7. 131 owners: William Optics
  8. 102 owners: Astro-Tech
  9. 88 owners: GSO
  10. 81 owners: Vixen

The most owned camera makes

  1. 986 owners: Canon
  2. 202 owners: QHYCCD
  3. 191 owners: Atik
  4. 187 owners: Philips
  5. 165 owners: SBIG
  6. 154 owners: Orion
  7. 145 owners: The Imaging Source
  8. 112 owners: Nikon
  9. 108 owners: Starlight Xpress
  10. 88 owners: Meade

The most owned mount makes

  1. 597 owners: SkyWatcher
  2. 309 owners: Celestron
  3. 122 owners: Orion
  4. 99 owners: Losmandy
  5. 92 owners: Meade
  6. 56 owners: Vixen
  7. 56 owners: Takahashi
  8. 43 owners: Astro-Physics
  9. 20 owners: Software Bisque
  10. 16 owners: 10Micron

Obviosuly, SkyWatcher mounts and telescopes, and Canon DSLRs dominate the market, as they are entry level producs. If you go to the Stats page, you will see, though, that integration hours with CCDs outnumber integration hours with DSLRs. This can be interpreted in two ways: first, most people that own a CCD have owned a DSLR before, with which they started; and second, people with CCDs tend to be more invested in the hobby, and spend more time per image.

I'll try to calculate the average integration time of CCD vs. DSLR, and add that to the stats.
