Interesting comments. I wondered those of you who use a MTY mount do any of you set it up and take it down each time? I do not have an observatory so have to do this. I currently use a Skywatcher AZ EQ6 with the Synscan hand controller. I can be up and running very quickly as I only use my laptop for the guiding and image acquisition. I would like to get a better quality mount (i.e. non mass produced far east) and was looking at the MTY, but wondered how much longer it would take to be up and imaging having to do everything through a planetarium set up on a laptop. My experience with ASCOM and trying to get everything working seamlessly has not been great. So the Sky X package with native drivers does look appealing as does the SB mount. |

well for what it's worth I went with the MyT mount not the 10 micron. 8) |

MattHerbik: That's weird. Despite the huge price differences, if I had the money laying around, I'd get the 10micron any day. Not being tied into a software companies' mandatory fees every year is huge. And, Ed does good work. My vote is for him on this. I've never seen him hose anyone over. I have seen HA work through just about every mount on the market and declare them all 'terrible'. At this point, it's probably user error on his part. |

Hobby Astronomer: good result Ha ! sometime it is very difficult to fight against a gremlin. we are playing with very small errors here so i am not surprised you had some trouble going unguided (sometime the problem is obvious, sometime very difficult to find...) the 10µ is able to run guided perfectly. |

I for one am using an Orion AZ/EQ-G and it is working out great for me so far. As for Ascom and EQmod, the learning curve is nothing, it's easy and not anything to be alarmed about, in fact it's quite simple. |

Hobby Astronomer:good result Ha ! I would not say this is a gremlin. Got a second opinion from Ray Gralak, the man that has been the proponent of unguiding imaging for amateur astronomers since 2003 and 2004. Can a 11" Edge HD on a GM 1000 HPS do thirty minute unguided subs one after another with perfectly round stars on a 10-15 point model? You cannot promise to someone what a mount will not deliver. An 11" Edge HD at F/10 has a 2,800 MM FL??? I tried and tried and tried to do unguided at a 2,000 MM FL with an 8" Edge HD. Talk about a migraine headache experience. This is very unfair. I was promised what this mount would not deliver. Will it deliver wonderful guided images? YES YES YES. And the quality of the guided images proves that I am no moron. Why set someone up for failure by promising what is not real to a new astronomer? HA http://www.astrobin.com/263067/ |

Yes, I am fully portable. I setup and break down each session. I did last night in fact, and over the new moon weekend. From unpacking the cases to imaging is about 40 minutes... this includes leveling the tripod, cabling everything together, setting up my table and chair, chatting with people, having a beer... Seriously though, its fast considering the complexity of what it can do...and setup is done while still light out. I can start my T-point run well before its even dark. In fact, most of the time I am ready to go (including a first focus run) well before its even dark enough to image! |

Fees for software aren't mandatory everything continues to work just without updating software. To equate this to something else there are plenty of people out there without windows 10 and are perfectly happy. Don't fix what isn't broken no need to endlessly update software. |

Software is very important and when it is integrated with the mount it just makes things that much easier. Nothing wrong with spending money on good software if it gets you a good nights sleep. HA |

I don't know if this input is still relevant. I bought a 10Micron (GM1000HPS) this summer from Ed and could not be happier. I am temporarily in Kansas and have wonderful dark skies 20min north so I set up and tear down every session. The GM1000HPS is perfect for that. I intend to use it with my EdgeHD11 eventually, but could not bring that to KS with me so I cannot comment on long focal length scopes at the moment. But I have been using a TV NP127is with a 1.5x extender (circa 1000mm FL) and 20min unguided is no sweat -- round stars every time. Of course this is a very solid refractor with everything threaded so flexure is not an issue. As to software. There is a new, free (at least it is now free) package under development, making rapid progress, by Michel, a kind user in Germany, that does most of what ModelMaker does -- and more. I have been using it in combination with SGP recently and the combo is near perfect. It uses SGP to take the images and do the plate solve but orchestrates the whole process. It allows me to turn model building over to the computer and sit back while it dials me in to pointing errors around 4.5" around the sky in a bit over a half an hour. There is also another python script I was using earlier that accomplishes the same model building task (but relies on PinPoint which I find to be inferior to PlateSolve2). In short, do not be afraid of the lack of model maker support (which i understand will be picked up by Baader anyway) |
