Looks like the forum is being bombarded by spammers lately.  Don't they know they are not welcome here.  Maybe new AB members should have their forum posts moderated instead of being allowed to post directly to the forum.  Thoughts, opinions?

not just the forum, a user (or users?) recently steals many photos and upload them to his album.  he should be banned.

Wow, I was not aware of that.  They should definitely be banned and prosecuted for copyright infringement.

one of the stolen image is Rob Gendler's M31.  very easy to identify it among all the other uploaded images from other regular users.

Seems like they've hit the website hard in the past day or so. Usually they come in waves a few at a time, but there are quite a bit more this time around. Hopefully there will one day be a system to stop these suckers before they get anywhere, whether that be community-driven or a small group of people shifting through many images.

Hey guys, I noticed all the spammers :-( I'm now just reactively banning them, but they keep coming back. I'm now gonna have to figure out a way to prevent this kind of thing, please have some patience. Sorry again, Salvatore.

They have quite recognizable posts/topics. May be a few ML algorithms  to prevent them from creating topics in first place?

Good to know something is being done about the spammers. It's truly annoying. Thanks, Salvatore for trying!

Salvatore, it's not your fault.  We know you are busy, and we all appreciate that you run this website.

Dear Salvatore,

I was very surprised to find that my images in the staging area are readly accessible to anyone, even without being logged. In fact, I discovered by accident that I could access any image I want, simply by writing its number (by the way, all the few images I saw were spam, absolutely unrelated to AP, which is another problem).
Regards,
Luiz Duczmal

Hi Luiz, staging area image were never meant to be private. Only unlisted. I believe it's documented with a shirt description somewhere in the process. /OT

Back in topic, I'm not 90% done with the anti-spam system. Thank you all for your patience so far...

OOF! They're starting an all-out assault on the forums now! Sal, if you don't already, maybe you should try a CAPTCHA system like Google's reCAPTCHA on the register page in addition to whatever you're cooking up. I've really liked it on all the websites I've seen it on.

Anyways, that's just my 2 cents.

Argh, lots of cleaning up today! But I should be finished in a few hours, then there's no way that they can spam again!

Alright, I just pushed an update to the website.

From now on, images belonging to users with an AstroBin Index < 1 will go through a moderation queue before appearing on the home page, the Wall or the search results.

This should ensure that they won't be visible anymore.

I'm not done yet with the forum, but basically I'll do it so you again need an Index >= 1 to post.

Now that's done too. Unfortunately this is a bit of an annoyance to new users, but we need to compromise.

Great job, but it seems to have gone too far -

My index which was much greater than 1 became 0 just 25 minutes ago...  oops, it is annoying.

Yeah that's an unrelated problem, that occurred overnight during the nightly Index generation cron job. I'm running the job again right now and it usually takes 2 hours.

Update after the night: no spam to be seen, either as images or in the forums. It worked!  8)

Good to know! 8)

Also, I don't think the topic counter has accounted for removed topics.  For example, the "Newsletter Discussion" forum topic counter shows 6 topics, but I only see 4 in the forum.

EDIT: Another thing occurred to me: How thoroughly will new posters be examined? I can imagine the spammers will start posting images of space with their crud to disguise themselves.
