Description

This was my first image to really benefit from my project to add auto guiding to my old Meade 2080 LX5. This had an ‘accurate’ (for its day) LX worm drive, but no PEC or autoguider interface. I modified my hand controller with help from the community, added an Orion Starshoot autoguider with ST4 output from my modified 8x50 finder-guider using relays and PHD to control the guiding. With an RMS of ~2.5 arc seconds, it can’t compete with modern mounts, but it shows what can be achieved with an old 1989 scope.

The image was taken with my DSI-II OSC and native infrared filter only, and once processed came alive with these ancient stars. I’m pleased with the focus (achieved with a Bahtinov mask) and depth of the image, given the relatively short integration time.
