Description

Discovered in 1783 by William Herschel, this fascinating nebula changes its shape visibly over periods of weeks of months. The star on the left end of the cloud, R Monocerotis, is the one lighting it up. It is named for Edwin Hubble (of Hubble Space Telescope fame), who studied it at Yerkes, Mt. Wilson, and Palomar in the first half of the 20th century. It is thought that the varying appearance is due to dense knots of dust near the star R Mon casting shadows as they orbit the star. It lies about 2,500 lightyears away from us in the constellation Monoceros, which is east of the more-familiar Orion.

A lot of the data I got on this one turned out not to be very good, due to focus issues, moonlight, my flat files not working very well, and other problems. But it came out okay!
