Description

There's a wide range of targets that lie within this image of central Auriga.  The open cluster M38 at a distance of 3500 light years contains a prominent yellow giant with an apparent magnitude of +7.9. This corresponds to an absolute magnitude of -1.5 or a luminosity of about 900 Suns. The smaller open cluster NGC 1907 is in close proximity astronomically but is likely only passing by M38 as the two originate from different parts of our galaxy.  To the left of M38 is Abell 9 (PK172+00.1) which is only 40" in diameter and is a probable planetary nebula.

The spider, IC417, part of "the Spider and the Fly" nebulae is an emission and star forming nebula about 10000 light years away.  The Fly, NGC 1931, at 7000 light years distant, is a mixed emission-reflection nebula with similar characteristics as the Orion Nebula.  It contains a smaller version of the Trapezium at the center.  Above and to the right of the Spider is S Aurigae which is a red carbon star.

Ha and SII were the brighter images.  There is very little signal in OIII except around the Spider and Abell 9 with a fainter signal around the Fly.

Imaged over several nights:  Nov 23-24; Dec 1, 5, 7, and 9, 2021.
