Description

This jellyfish-looking bubble is the Crescent Nebula, a cloud of super-hot gas about 25 light-years across, located about 5,000 light years distant in the constellation Cygnus. This image comprises about 24 hours worth of 5 minute exposures from my back patio, using filters that isolate light from hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The oxygen produces the blue envelope that surrounds and permeates the nebula. At the center of the nebula is as a massive Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136) that is shedding its outer layers in a extremely strong stellar wind, ejecting the equivalent of the Sun's mass every 10,000 years. The nebula's unique shape is likely the result of this shock wave of gas interacting with material ejected in an earlier phase. These are the death throes of the central star, and should ultimately culminate in a supernova explosion at some point in the future. This is the first of a few astrophotography images to come: I’ve got a backlog of imaging data to process. For now, enjoy this oddity: it’s one of my favorite objects.
