Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a small galaxy group located in the constellation of Capricornus at a declination of -20 degrees.

These 4 galaxies are all at different distances, ranging from 340 to 470 million light years away.  They do not appear to be interacting to me.

The brightest galaxy of the group, Hickson 87a, is located 380 million light years away.  This magnitude 14 galaxy spans 1.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 160,000 light years.  This object has an interesting dust lane that appears as a single lane on the right side and a triple lane on the left side.

The face-on galaxy ESO 597-34 appearing in the lower right of the image is not a member of Hickson 87.

All of my imaged Hickson galaxies are contained in my Astrobin Hickson Galaxy Collection.
