Description

This rarely imaged object is an edge-on lenticular starburst galaxy located 30 million light years away in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +13 degrees.  This galaxy is located about 1 degree west of the famous Leo galaxy triplet.

NGC 3593 is a magnitude 12 galaxy which spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years.

Studies have identified that this galaxy is comprised of 2 counterrotating disks, likely due to a past merger.  I like the chaotic dust lanes rambling through the inner disk.
