Description

Triangulum Galaxy, Messier 33

Spiral Galaxy in the constellation Triangulum

The Triangulum Galaxy is a beautiful spiral galaxy 2.73 million light-years from Earth, with a diameter of about 60,000 light years, and includes about 40 billion stars. It's the third largest of the "local group" of galaxies which includes the Andromeda Galaxy and our own Milky Way. For comparison, the Milky Way has about twice the diameter and ten times as many stars. Many familiar types of objects found in our own galaxy, such as open clusters and emission nebulae, are visible on close inspection in M33 as well.

My first night in Gila had the clearest, darkest sky I've ever seen. I was shocked to realize that for the first time I could see M33 with my naked eye! This is a fun target that I've photographed in the past with lesser skills and equipment. I realized that the season, my 6" Newtonian and better astro camera made this a perfect target for the clear, dark skies in Gila.

Tech Stuff: GSO 6" f/4 Imaging Newtonian, TS Coma Corrector 0.95x, ZWO ASI294MC-Pro camera, Orion Sirius mount. 290x60s exposures (4:50). Captured 12/5 and 12/6/21 from Casitas de Gila in Gila, NM.
