Description

This object is a pair of small interacting galaxies located 180 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +41 degrees.

The larger galaxy, NGC 5410, spans 1.6 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 80,000 light years. The smaller galaxy, UGC 8932 or PGC 49896, has a diameter of 60,000 light years.

Each galaxy has a bright barred core, white in NGC 5410 and blue in UGC 8932. Bright blue star clusters have been initiated in a ring in NGC 5410. Star streams are connecting the two galaxies.

A large distant galaxy cluster is seen to the top right. This cluster, Abell 1838, is comprised of galaxies that are 3 billion light years away.
