This nebula’s popular name, “Tadpole Nebula” comes from the small feature on its edge at about 7:00 in this image. Most (but hardly all) processing of this target targets emphasizing this feature and consequently enhance the Tadpole’s contrasting elements even if it costs resolution elsewhere. This rendering has attempted to reveal the plethora of detail available across the entire image, admittedly somewhat humbling the poor Tadpoles—but, c’est la gare!

Tadpoles, which exist in many active molecular clouds, arise in clouds being actively carved by supersonic winds and intense UV radiation generated from new and young stars. No surprise that multiple new stars, and even multiple clusters of new stars, generate a complexity of winds, radiation, and, consequently, complexity of interactions with their surrounding natal cloud.

IC 401, when processed in the manner shown here, resembles the Rosette Nebula; a giant molecular cloud with a nascent star cluster at its center that pushes the gases and dust outward to form a donut-like cloud glowing, predominantly, by HII radiation. Here the central star cluster, NGC 1893, does not stand out as clearly as it does in the Rosette Nebula, but it is indeed the energy source determining the IC 410’s shape and illumination. (NGC 1893 lies just below the blackish areas in the nebula; probably many of its stars are concealed in the cloud.)
