Description

This unrelated pair of galaxies is located in the constellation of Bootes at a declination of +50 degrees.

NGC 5673 is the magnitude 13 blue edge-on spiral to the upper right, located 120 million light years away.  It spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years.

IC 1029 is the magnitude 12.7 yellow edge-on spiral to the lower left, located 160 million light years away.  It spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a Milky Way size diameter of 120,000 light years.

It is puzzling to me why the NGC designation was given here to the dimmer, smaller galaxy.
