Description

The Squid Nebula, Ou4, is nestled with the Ha region Sh2-129. For this portrait, I focused on Ou4. The OIII emissions are very faint, so I have more than double the integration time in OIII as compared to Ha so that I can focus on the subject of Ou4.

What gives Ou4 its unique shape? Doing some internet research, I ran into this paper: "Gas physical conditions and kinematics of the giant
outflow Ou4" [https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01022286/document]. It seems the system has emitted a slow wind for some time into sh2-129, but more recently a fast wind was released from the poles. When the fast wind intercepted the slow wind, shockwaves produced the shape we now see.
