Description

Since the Orion Nebula was first seen by Cyzat of Lucerne in 1618, few objects in the heavens have been more constantly observed and assiduously drawn and photographed than this remarkable and complicated structure.

Nearly everyone can recognize the three aligned stars of Orion's belt, know in South Africa as Drie Konings (the three kings) or Drie Susters (the three sisters). Hanging from this asterism is Orion's sword, which seems to be composed of three stars. The middle star of Orion's sword is where M42 is found, with the region being illuminated by a multi- star system at its centre known as the Trapezium Cluster due to its trapezoid shape.

The knot of gas to the bottom right of M42 is De Marian's Nebula. This nebula is actually part of the Orion Nebula despite having been given a unique Messier designation of M43. Part of the Running Man Nebula can be seen on the bottom of the image.
