Description

This is an image of the small planetary nebula NGC 2346 in the constellation Monoceros. NGC 2346 is sometimes called the Butterfly Nebula and the Hourglass Nebula. This object is very small at 1x3 arcmin so I imaged this using 1x1 binning at .64 arcsec/pixel resolution using 1/2 the image sensor. The image above is only a very small crop of a much larger field of view. The image is also rotated and north is to the right.  A slight enlargement at 130% normal size is available on my webpage link. A lot has been written about NGC 2346 and Hubble has imaged it. Here is a link and explanation of the Hubble data.  https://esahubble.org/images/opo9935d/
NGC 2346 has a bipolar shape, similar to many other planetary nebula. It also has a bluish core indicative of OIII emission. The central star is actually a double although at my resolution its impossible to resolve. NGC 2346 is fairly bright so its fairly easy to image although tough to get much detail.  The detail visible in the core was a pleasant surprise using my 6" refractor and the steady skies helped tremendously.  This object was imaged under fairly dark skies at Starry Night Ranch near Okeechobee Florida.
