Description

One of our closest galactic neighbors, the Small Magellanic SMC) cloud is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way located approximately 200,000 light years from Earth. From my southerly location at latitude 33.5d south, the SMC is easily accessible this time of year providing plenty of imaging time when the skies are clear.

This wide field image captures the galaxy and its resident Ha and OIII regions along with a number of globular clusters in the same field of view. The globular NGC104 (47 Tucanae) at the top of the image is a little over 13,000 light years away and is a well visited object by visual observers and astro imagers alike.  The other prominent globular at the 8 o'clock position, NGC362, is about 28,000 light years away. There are many more smaller globulars lurking in the background along with at least one galaxy, NGC406 which is 64 million light years away.

My processing objective with this image was to try and include the Ha and OIII data along with the RGB information to produce an integrated image that presents the key chrominance information along with the narrowband emission lines. I did also capture SII data but it was not of sufficient prominence to make it worthwhile trying to integrate. This was my first attempt at incorporating the Ha and OIII data in this manner and resulted in much time sitting at the computer pondering the next move. Using Pixinsight I made use of established techniques to remove the emission line data from the broadband filter data to create specific masks that could then be used to blend in the Ha and OIII into the colour channels. In all, it was an interesting project.
