NGC 6654

This object is a face-on barred lenticular galaxy located 90 million light years away in the constellation of Draco at a declination of +73 degrees. This 12th magnitude galaxy spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 70,000 light years.

I find the barred core area to be interesting. I like the short stubby arms which seem to want to grow out of the bar ends.

I imaged this galaxy because I was curious about the dark spot in the galaxy disk to the upper right (northwest) that I saw in the DSS survey image. It could simply be an area of foreground Milky Way dust, but the disk has similar (but fainter) dark areas on the upper left side of the disk, as well as some on the outer edge of the lower right side. Other than the dark areas, the disk looks fairly uniform in brightness.

Perhaps a former companion or two caused these dark areas before being absorbed into the disk, or perhaps they are still there but are not easily visible. This is another galaxy with interesting questions yet to be answered.
