Description

This Abell PN, also known as PK 053+03.1, is located 4600 light years away in the constellation of Sagitta at a declination of +20 degrees.  It is a magnitude 16 PN which spans 1.8 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 2.5 light years.

This is one of those PNe that resemble a HII region, with the bright red HII arc at the top.  I do not see a progenitor star.

I find the asymmetric red arc to be extremely unusual and I do not understand its formation as part of the PN development process.  The arc lines up so well with the nebula rim that I do not believe we are looking at 2 separate superimposed objects.  But then again, it is hard to comprehend how such a localized feature could be formed.
