Description

This object is a flocculent galaxy located 20 million light-years away in the Draco constellation at a declination of +70 degrees. It spans 30,000 light-years, just a quarter of the size of our Milky Way. This galaxy is 5 arc-minutes across.

Flocculent galaxies by nature seem to be a bit shy about revealing their details. Faint red areas of emission are seen here scattered throughout the swirling spiral arms, as well as a few bright blue clusters of newly forming stars. Dark brown dust lanes can also be seen in numerous areas of the disk.

This galaxy is located in a giant, sparsely populated region of space called the Local Void, although quite a few small galaxies are seen in the background.

Thanks to Gotthard for pushing me to image this galaxy as it is about to be lost in the sunset this season. While processing his own excellent image of this object, he had examined my first image of this object from 3 years ago and was wondering what it would look like with my new setup.
