Description

Testing CCD47 reducer on RC8" with Sony A7 at APS-C.

The Beehive Cluster is an open star cluster in the constellation Cancer, also known as Praesepe, M44, or NGC 2632¹²³. It is one of the nearest open clusters to Earth, lying at a distance of about 577 light years¹²⁴. It contains about 1,000 stars, mostly faint and white, but also some red giants and dwarfs¹²³.

The Beehive Cluster was known to ancient astronomers, such as Ptolemy, who described it as a \"nebulous mass in the breast of Cancer\"¹². It was also called Praesepe, which means \"manger\" or \"crib\" in Latin, because it was seen as a manger between two donkeys, represented by the stars Asellus Borealis and Asellus Australis¹². The name Beehive Cluster was given by Admiral Smyth in the 19th century, who compared its appearance to \"a swarm of bees clustered together\"¹².

The Beehive Cluster has an apparent magnitude of 3.7 and an apparent size of 1.5 degrees, or three full-moon diameters¹². It can be seen with the naked eye under dark skies, or with binoculars or a small telescope under any conditions¹². It appears as a bright patch of light near the star Beta Cancri¹². It is best seen from the northern hemisphere during winter months².
