Description

Note - the 4th edition of the Compendium was released on November 6, 2023, including both Mac and Windows versions.   Please go to this link for the latest edition.
Also,  on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023, at 8:30 pm CST, I will be giving an overview of the new edition of the Compendium on the free Youtube Astro Imaging Channel.

As some of you are aware, I have been working for the past several months writing an eBook and an accompanying spreadsheet to help astrophotographers find interesting deep sky targets.

The compendium is available for free download at these links:

The eBook and spreadsheet are designed to compliment each other.  The 420 page eBook has more of a visual focus and is somewhat less comprehensive than the 420,000 cell spreadsheet.

The Compendium provides technical data on a total of 3300 unique deep sky objects from 27 object types for declinations down to -50 degrees. These objects are cross-referenced to 28 catalogues.

Object images are provided for 1922 of these objects in 96 compilation posters.  Hyperlinks and thumbnail mouseovers are used for each of the 1922 imaged objects, including a link to each object's Astrobin image posting.    Image data, such as filters, pixel scale and focal length, is provided for each image.

Out of the 28 catalogues shown, 8 catalogues (including Messier, Arp, and Abell PN) are completely  imaged.  Other catalogues such as Sharpless, vdB, Barnard, Herschel 400, Hickson, and Caldwell have about half of their objects imaged (in my view, the most interesting ones).

In addition to catalogues, 83 collections are presented of object features such as loops, rings, shells, Herbig-Haro objects, barlenses and voorwerps.  I find it interesting and instructive to compare images of objects with the same feature on the same page.

The final component to the Compendium is a list of my favorite 200 astrophotography targets to image.

Thank you to the Astrobin reviewers who provided valuable input to this compendium by reviewing the draft, especially Jeff Coldrey, Nick Large, Alan Brunelle, Bruce Donzanti, Uwe Deutermann, Gary Lopez,  Niall MacNeill, John Favalessa, Tom Gray, Kurt Zeppetello and Riedl Rudolf.  If you have the draft, please disregard it and download Revision 1.   There have been many changes the past few months.

Thank you to the Astrobin community for all of the support and encouragement over the years.  My hope is that you will be able to use this compendium to find plenty of interesting deep sky objects for your future imaging.
