Description

Is it possible to record a lunar transit of the International Space Station (ISS) using modest equipment? Is it possible to resolve the ISS solar panels? This composite image demonstrates the path of the H-shaped ISS as it transits an almost-full moon. Version C is an animated GIF image of the transit at 50 fps.

Image details:

Stack of 42 video frames obtained with a Canon 550D at 50 fps and a Samyang 135 mm lens at f/4.

The frames were deconvolved, contrast-enhanced and 2x upscaled at 3.42 arcsec/pixel with Pixinsight. Final cropping and minor tweaks were performed with Darktable.

Transit details:

Transit started at Wednesday 2019-09-11 20:17:31.08 UTC from southwest (bottom right).

ISS angular size: 41.96 arcsec; distance: 658.46 km.

Transit duration: 0.78 s; transit chord length: 26.8 arcmin.
