Description

There are bits of the sky still yet little admired in high resolution and in color. Here then is NGC 3261...

This isn't an unknown galaxy by any means. Indeed in a paper in 1993 an astronomer wrote: "This is another comparatively poorly studied galaxy despite its size and abundance of HII regions." Yet almost 30 years later there are still no high quality images of it! At 100 million light years away, it certainly *is* a challenge. It isn't much more than 2 arcminutes in size- but wow does it pack a galaxy of stuff! Well-defined arms and hot-pink star forming regions adorn the disk of this galaxy. I hope you enjoy the view as much as enjoy sharing it. Rarely are images published at their intrinsic scale or more such as this- it multiplies the challenges of processing considerably.
