Description

M106 on the top left of the image is about 21 million light-years beyond our milky way and about 80.000 light-years wide from one edge to the other - about the size of the Andromeda galaxy. It contains four spiral arms, of which two are mainly red and are sometimes called the anomalous arms. They are located half way between the two easily visible spiral arms and are made out of excited hydrogen spewing out from a supermassive black hole 30 million times the mass of our sun.

These red arms are just becoming visible in my image and I hope to add more data in the future to bringt out more details and the color of these two spiral arms.

M106 is visually accompanied with the small Galaxy NGC 4248 in the two o-clock position. It is 24 million light-years away and 20.000 light-years wide.

The beautiful edge-on Galaxy NGC 4217 in the bottom right is about 60 million light-years away and 75.000 light-years wide. It is visually accompanied by the Galaxy 4226 in the eight o-clock position. It is about 330 million light-years away and likely has a diameter of about 120.000 light-years - which is the same size and distance as for the two interacting galaxies NGC 4231 and NGC 4232 in the top middle of the image.
