Arp 293

This object is a pair of tiny interacting galaxies located a quarter of a billion light years away in the constellation of Draco at a declination of +59 degrees. The top galaxy is NGC 6285, while the bottom galaxy is NGC 6286. NGC 6286 is the slightly larger galaxy, spanning 1.3 arc-minutes in our apparent view which corresponds to an actual diameter of 95,000 light years.

Both galaxies appear to be disturbed, likely by the interaction between them. NGC 6285 looks like it is twisted out of plane. It has a yellow core and blue arms, and what looks like a circular patch of dust at the start of the top arm. The yellowish NGC 6286 is almost edge-on, showing off an interesting dust lane pattern.

My favorite aspect of this object is the star streams, particularly what looks like a half of a polar ring that starts at the lower left arm of NGC 6286 and wraps around until it is perpendicular to the core. It fades out as it crosses the core going upward. My eyes want to connect this faint stream to NGC 6295 above. Looking at the inverted image view, I think that the connection is there but I am not 100% sure.

The ultra-thin galaxy in the upper right corner is PGC 59333, slightly further away and slightly larger in diameter at about 120,000 light years.
