Description

NGC 2217 is an 11.7 magnitude barred spiral in Canis Major. About 65 million light years away, this is a gas rich galaxy with the outer halo apparently rotating in a retrograde motion (https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-94-011-2434-8_78).

Some images claim that the outer shell of stars is bluish, indicating high star formation rates while the inner bar structure appears more yellow. These contrasts are difficult to see in this image, which was carefully colour balanced using G2V stars as a reference.
