Description

Collinder 107 is a large open cluster located one degree east of the Rosette Nebula. It is a large, irregular and very poorly concentrated open cluster approximately 35' in diameter, with an integrated visual magnitude of 5.1. It is classified as a Trumpler Type IV 3 p open cluster, and is indistinct above the rich Milky Way background of stars.

Cr 107 forms a distorted ring of approximately 30 stars, ranging in brightness from magnitude 7.1 down to magnitude 11.0, with clumps of stars in sections of the ring. A right-angle pattern of three stars form a distinct L-shaped pattern along with a nearby star of magnitude 6.5

A study by Isserstedt & Schmidt-Kaler (1973) determined the cluster and many of the surrounding field stars were at a common distance of approximately 5400 light years and exhibited similar proper motions and radial velocities. They concluded that Cr 107 is not a cluster, but part of a spiral filament of stars.

The image was acquired under a waxing gibbous moon as an experiment to see if it was possible to acquire useful data under such conditions.
