Description

In the constellation Scutum (the shield), there is an area of the Milky Way that is void of any dust. Without the dust which can be seen everywhere else in this image, we get a rare glimpse deeper into our galaxy showing the light from thousands of stars shining through. This is know as the Scutum star cloud, it can be seen towards lower middle of the image. It is one of the brightest patches of the milky way and can be seen naked eye quite easily as long as you are under reasonably dark skies. On the northern edge of this cloud you may be able to make out a bright smudge which is M11 - The Wild Duck cluster. There are many other clusters in this image, mainly around the star cloud itself.
