Description

M13 is a globular cluster made up of 300,000 stars. Its has a diameter of 145 light years, to put that in perspective one light year is around 6 trillion miles. In 1974 we used radio waves to broadcast a message to the cluster, information about our civilization, our planets position ect. It is known as the Arecibo message. Seeing as M13 is 25,000 lightyears away, that message wont reach it for a long long time. In fact by the time it does reach the area, M13 will no longer be there, it will have moved on. Apparently the message was more of a show of the technology of the time rather than a genuine attempt to contact another civilization!

This image is the first deep space object i have imaged with my new scope (or any scope for that matter) I have wanted to image a glob for a long time but haven't had the focal length to do so, M13 was at zenith so it was meant to be! Unfortunately the Moon was in the sky when shooting this which may have affected the data a little but i couldn't pass up the opportunity of a clear sky.

Processing this was extremely tough. So tough that i will be staying away from globs for a while! The cluster made me find new ways of doing things during processing which isnt all bad because i learned a few things, but there was a lot of frustration involved. I also had to deal with the worst noise i have ever experienced, which i wasn't able to kill off completely.

So far i'm very happy with the 115EDT, i really have no complaints. Hopefully it will stay that way!
