Description

M58 (NGC4579) is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo. It is one of the brightest objects in the Virgo Cluster. It's distance from us is approximately 68 million light years. It is estimated to be about 107,000 light years in diameter.

Also seen on the right side of this image is a set of spiral galaxies nicknamed the Siamese Twins or Butterfly Galaxies (NGC 4567 & 4568). These galaxies are in the process of colliding and merging with each other, with the highest star formation activity in the part where they overlap. However the system is still in an early phase of interaction. They are about 60 million light-years away.
