      Description

A bi-colour narrowband image of the bipolar emission nebula, NGC6164/6165.

NGC 6164 and NGC 6165 are bright components of this bipolar emission nebula 4,200 light-years away in Norma. The star at the centre, HD 148937, is a triple star system including a short-lived, highly luminous O7 type star of about 40 solar masses. The material in the nebula was ejected from the poles of this star in several bursts beginning about 4,000 years ago.

Some of the OIII collected for this image was used in the May 22, 2014 APOD by Martin Pugh and me.
