Description

NGC6888 (Crescent Nebula) and PN G75.5+1.7 (the Soap Bubble) in Cygnus

The "Soap Bubble Nebula", diagonally opposite the Crescent in this image, is a planetary nebula that was discovered by amateur astronomer Dave Jurasevich in 2008. The reasons it was not discovered until recently are given as its faintness and the fact that it is embedded in a diffuse nebula. At a distance of 4000 light years and 5 light years in diameter, its spherical symmetry is considered remarkable and comparable to Abell 39 which is about the same size. NGC6888, the nebula is a shell of gas that is being energized by the strong stellar wind from the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136 which is the bright star at the center of the nebula. North is up.
