Description

M57 (Ring Nebula)

The Ring Nebula (also catalogued as Messier 57, M57 or NGC 6720) is a planetary nebula in the northern constellation of Lyra. Such objects are formed when a shell of ionized gas is expelled into the surrounding interstellar medium by a red giant star, which was passing through the last stage in its evolution before becoming a white dwarf.

M57 was among the first of my astro-photography targets. I've had this image in my archives for four years and I am just now processing in 2012. This image was horrible in every sense. For starters, it is just a single frame; M57 is off center, the stars were trailing by several pixels, in-camera dark calibration, and noisy. But my processing skills of today, I was able to make it look somewhat descent.
