Description

This beautiful spiral galaxy is located in the evening skies of North America in the fall/winter time of year. It resides within the constellation of Triangulum and is approximately 3 million light years from Earth. Under extremely dark sky conditions, this galaxy can be seen with the naked eye as a faint glow. The fact that a vast amount of individual stars are resolved into dots gives evidence of the extremely fine seeing and transparency conditions of the observatory site.

The brown tendrils are gas and dust, while the pinkish colored areas are star forming regions. The very bright stars are foreground objects located with our Milky Way galaxy, while the rest are stars of the Pinwheel.
