Description

I attempted to take a longer deeper session of M31 by collecting 3 hours of 4 minute subexposures (compared to the previous 60 second subexposures). Unfortunately the cord drag from my intervalometer caused long star trails on many of the subs, then the sky started to look a little milky and the telescope got a lot of dew on it, probably on the secondary mirror also. I selected the best 11 subexposures to process. I was getting weak results with the StarTools Dev module, so I decided to try the Autodev module. Usually I don't use Autodev because it processes much more aggressively than I usually do and produces a lot of noise in the background. But it does bring out the nebulosity of the galaxy more strongly. I did no additional processing other than to reduce the color saturation of the background so you can see the noise pattern. I kind of like the look of the noise pattern, Startools Denoise can blend the noise pattern together nicely if you choose to use it. I noticed AutoDev put all of the color into the background but the stars and galaxy are mostly white and shades of gray.

Unguided with PEC turned on.

The temperature dropped from 50 to 48 degrees F during the 3 hours, but the only subexposures selected for processing were taken during the first hour. I have not taken any darks or bias frames yet.

Image B: Shifted color balance to blue, also reduced saturation of background.

Image C: Shifted color balance to green and away from red compared to original message.

Image D: Wavelet Sharpen large scales 4-5 100 percent amount 200 percent.

Image E: StarTools Denoise module employed to reduce noise. Destroys data.

Image F: Rebalanced color back to red mostly and a little blue.
