Description

Using Telescope #5 (Officina Stellare Riccardi-Honders RH200 D = 200mm f/3, FLI Microline 16200) system of ChileScope observatory for trying to lift up relatively dim (> +14m, > +16m) galaxies in the vicinity of the position of the Moon around the Total Lunar Eclipse of May 15/16, 2022 [1]. The exposure sets used costed of two data sets:
  • Dataset [D1]: 26x 180sec RGB exposures of the area a week before the TLE (May 9, 2022) - also shown under [2].
  • Dataset [D2]: 24x 60sec R exposures taken during the period of +- 20 min of the maximum phase of the TLE - stacked in an attempt to lift the galaxies in the background in the radius of 1 deg. from the lunar limb.

The summary of image revisions:
  • The original revision and revision B are using the dataset [D2] with the HDR composition with a single R 60 sec exposure frame (also shown in revision E) to show the non-overexposed featured on the lunar limb.
  • The revisions C and D are with dataset [D1] added to enhance the background features just for reference.
  • Revision F shows a 3Dplot based on a raw image revision E without any intensity transformations applied.
  • Original revision and revisions B-E are all subframes of the original exposure frame and in original resolution.


Remarkably, two rather dim galaxies are detectible on the original revision and in revision B:
  • PGC 55251 (+14.4m)
  • PGC 872828 (+16.7m)


A single image taken from all all-sky camera of the observatory site near the maximum phase of the eclipse [3] to illustrate the observational confitions (the angular altitude of the Moon at that moment is about +77 deg.):
