Description

This image covers a large area of the Milky Way from the Southern Cross (Crux) to almost reaching the galactic centre. The Emu is represented by the dark areas of dust which obscure the light from the Milky Way behind. The dark area adjacent to the Crux at the right hand side of the picture is called the coal sack nebula and forms the head of the Emu. Trace the dark areas across the Milky Way to the left of the image to see how the Emu's neck becomes the body of the bird (can you see it?).

This dark area has been recognised by the Australian Aborigines as a figure that represents the Emu, the Australian native bird that also appears on the Australian Government coat of arms.

Edit: 17 March 2017. I've uploaded a better version which was taken at the time with a cls-ccd light pollution filter installed in the camera.
