Description

This is a full resolution 6 panel mosaic of the Veil Nebula in Cygnus done in Ha.

The Veil Nebula, originally called the "Bridal Veil" is an enormous remnant of a supernova thought to have happened 5000-8000 years ago. Some suggest there was a previous supernova, about 18,000 years ago. The filaments are thought to be the shock wave of the more recent explosion interacting with the wreckage of the previous explosion. The Eastern edge of the Veil emits brightly in X-ray which is consistent with a shock wave interacting with previously existing material.

The Veil occupies an area of about 3 degrees, so it would take about 5-6 full Moons to span it in each direction, or about 25-30 full Moons to cover the entire nebula. It spans approximately 100 LY and is about 1500 LY distant.

This image is large, 5460X6799 pixels, it takes a little while to download the full sized image but it is worthwhile. There is a lot of detail particularly in the faint nebular bands in the upper left and mid way down on the right side. On the right, half way down is the the Witch's Broom with the magnitude 4.2 star, 52 Cyg. At the top right is Pickering's Triangle. The left side is the Eastern Veil.
