Description

This is First Light of the Astrodon Near-Infrared >700 nm filter (NIR) versus what you see with the H-alpha filter. Several of us were interested to see if the NIR filter would show any structures other than stars. The animation clearly shows that for the most part, the answer is no. Although there are a series of dark structures that are similar in both images and likely dark clouds (not dark matter) in front of the emission nebula, obscuring the stars and in the case of the H-alpha image, the emissions behind. This lack of coincident emission nebulous structures in NIR image was to be expected considering the absence of any strong emission lines in the NIR area of the electromagnetic spectra.
