Description

Update: 20 Feb. 2024
---------------------------------
This image was first published ten years ago in 2014 and reposted in 2018 following some minor tweaks to levels and curves. In response to a request for a printed copy of this image, I decided to reprocess the old data just to see what could be done with the improvement in tools (and processing skills) that have developed during the intervening decade. It was a challenge to manage the noise levels in this image no doubt due to the sparsity of data given that I only took nine subs per channel. One change that I have made in my data acquisition since first starting in astrophotography is to take lots and lots more data. With my own backyard observatory now this is much easier and I target for a minimum of 30 subs per chrominance channel.

This was one of the first images that I published from my QSI683 camera, which I am still using. The Skywatcher 100mm ED OTA used for this image has been off loaded and I must say for a relatively inexpensive OTA, it did a fine job. Processing of this original image was in Pixinsight which was also very early on in my experience with this product. I am still using Pixinsight which has more than kept up with the times with contemporary processing tools and techniques. I've had plenty of hours of practice in the mean time as well

Clear skies,
Rodney

The popular quartet of Galaxies in the constellation of Grus (the Crane). Consisting of four large spiral galaxies they make a nice image in a single field of view. Image composed of: Luminance = 12 x 15 mins;

R, G & B = 9 x 15 mins each.
