Description

On Sunday, October 19, 2014, Comet Siding Spring passed about 86000 miles from Mars. Unfortunately, it happened at about noon my time. However, I was fortunate enough to be able to capture this image of Mars and the Siding Spring comet this evening just before it set shortly following sunset. Mars is the big blob at the top (in order to see the comet, I had to overexpose Mars) and the comet is the fuzzy patch bracketed by the two arrows. North is to the right in this image. At the time this was taken, the comet was less than 20' angular separation from Mars.

This is a composite of 10-60 second images taken at the Cascade Mountain Observatory (AKA my back yard, Orem, UT).
