Description

ok, so what about the Helix.. Its huge for starters and is spitting out largely HA and Oiii. If you look at the streamers in the centre, these are known as knots though its not clear whats causing them. Basically the heads are similar to Bok globules and could well be planet forming material.(based on the interweb)

This is almost face on but if you think about this as being a 3d object, what you are doing is looking through a tunnel that's about a trillion KM's long. In LRGB images galaxies are frequently shown in the traditionally blue area in the centre which you are seeing through the tunnel itself (not in this image though but Adam Block recently put up an excellent LRGB which shows them clearly ).

Back in the early Naughties, urban legend (hubble archive) has it that the famous image produced by the Hubble was a matter of lucky imaging as it had to be repointed in the direction of the planetary nebula so its optics could be protected (?) from an incoming shower of space dust/floating George Cloonys, etc and so whilst they were looking the wrong way from whatever target they were scheduled to observe, they spent a happy arvo imaging the Helix.

All facts and figures are sourced from various bits of the web so apologies in advance if they are just plain wrong

Details

54 subs at 600 Sec (9 hours), minus 20 degrees, HA 5nm Astrodon filters

Imaging was with an STL6303e guided via OAG

Processed with Pixinsite with minor tweaks with a healing tool in PS due to some stacking artifacts.

Clear skies and thanks for looking
