NGC 6992 Eastern Veil Nebula

The Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus. It constitutes the visible portions of the Cygnus Loop, a large but relatively faint supernova remnant. The source supernova exploded some 5,000 to 8,000 years ago, and the remnants have since expanded to cover an area roughly 3 arc-degrees (about 6 times the diameter of the full moon). The distance to the nebula is not precisely known, but Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer data supports a distance of about 1,470 light-years. [Source: adapted from Wikipedia]

This image was a complete shot in the dark (no pun intended, really!). I had no idea if I would be able capture any of the nebula given my level of light pollution. I have a questionable polar alignment (can't see Polaris) but I thought if there's any possibility of an image at all it won't reveal itself with short exposures so I went for 10 minute subs. Weather permitting I'll try to get another 7-10 frames before the Veil rotates out of view for the year (and take some actual 600s darks). This was done with my newly-modded Canon 600D which worked great.

Version B: used Feature Mask in ImagesPlus to remove about a million of the smaller stars.

Version C: used HLVG to remove some of the more offensive green

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
