Description

M 6 is an Open Cluster (also known as NGC 6405 and Butterfly Cluster) located in the constellation Scorpius. The nickname Butterfly Cluster derives from the vague resemblance of its shape to a butterfly. It is located around 1,600 light years from earth.

The first astronomer to record the Butterfly Cluster's existence was Giovanni Battista Hodierna in 1654. In 1764 Charles Messier catalogued the cluster as M6.
