Description

The North America Nebula (NGC 7000 or Caldwell 20) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, close to the star Deneb. The remarkable shape of the nebula resembles that of the continent of North America, complete with a prominent Gulf of Mexico. It covers an area of more than four times the size of the full moon; but its surface brightness is low, so normally it cannot be seen with the unaided eye. Binoculars and telescopes with large fields of view (approximately 3°) will show it as a foggy patch of light under sufficiently dark skies. [Source: adapted from Wikipedia]

The prominent red color is caused by Hydrogen atoms as they are excited by surrounding energy. As an atom takes on energy its electron makes a quantum leap to higher orbit. When it falls back to its original orbit, the atom gives off a photon of energy at the so-called Hydrogen Alpha (Ha) emission frequency. [Source: adapted from Wikipedia]

NGC 7000 was possibly discovered by William Herschel on October 24, 1786, who noted its "faint, extremely large, diffuse nebulosity." His son, John Herschel, definitely observed it before 1833. It is approximately 1,600 light years distant and measures ~100 ly across. [Source: adapted from Wikipedia and Space.com]

I've been wanting to try out my little (tiny?) 2.6" AT65EDQ and this seemed like a perfect opportunity. Light pollution abounded, as always, exacerbated by a quarter moon, but the image still didn't turn out as bad as it could have. It's pretty diffuse, without nearly the structure I've seen from more experienced imagers, but it's a start.
