Description

This image depicts Arp 105, Ambarzumian's Knot, The Guitar and Abell 1185. There are a great many galaxies in this image. Arp 105, shown to the left of the image, consists of at least 3 galaxies and was the prime target for this project. The upper one is NGC 3561A and it appears to be a very disturbed SA(r)a pec spiral. There are 2 major plumes emanating from it. Below it is the large elliptical NGC 3561B - which is also classed as SA(r)a pec and is a LINER or Sy3 galaxy. Below these 2 galaxies is the nearly starlike Ambarzumian's Knot which is very blue compared to the other two. Zwicky later found two more galaxies that are within the halo of NGC 3561. There is another galaxy about half way between the core and Ambarzumian's knot which is also blue. Arp found this galaxy to be starlike even through the 200", which he used to produce his original deep image of this system. I believe it is just visible in my image, at mag 20. There is also, of course, a quasar (very faint in my image) at 10.7 billion light years distant according to it's perceived redshift, which Arp claims is nearby and has been ejected from NGC 3561B. There is, remarkably, not another QSO in the entire field. Arp considers the spectacular plume to have been created by the counterjet heading North from the Elliptical galaxy, in the opposite direction from the Southerly ejection terminating in Ambarzumian's Knot.

Also in the image is a large part of the Abell 1185 cluster and virtually every point of light visible in the image is a galaxy. Of particular interest is the interacting triplet of galaxies, NGC 3550, to the North West of Arp 105. I've identified some of the brighter galaxies, some are very obscure.

This image the sum of 50 x 120 second exposures through the 10" f4.8 Newt / H9C.
